CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Bobby kept his word. They returned to town. He stumbled homeward, shadowed by Mister Dog. Eloise, a little unsteady herself, returned to her hotel. She considered calling the police, considered looking for Mathias or the Governor. In the end she just washed her face, changed into pyjamas and started the laptop. She needed time to process before she acted. Needed to get things into perspective. She was still reeling, feeling punchy, from the whiskey, the drama, the trauma of time spent with Bobby. She did an internet search on the seed vault. There was plenty of information to find, including the vault’s own website. The Svalbard seed vault, sometimes referred to as the Doomsday vault, was funded by the Norwegian government. The vault was carved into a mountainside above Longyearbyen airport, sitting at about 130 metres above sea level. She checked on a map. She hadn’t noticed it upon arrival at the airport, but then it looked like it was a couple of miles from there by road. She refocused on the blurb about the vault. At its core it consisted of three halls, sited over 100 metres inside the mountain itself, cooled to -18 degrees Celsius by the natural permafrost combined with some supplementary cooling systems. To date they had close to a million seed deposits and hadn’t yet filled the first of the three halls.

It was interesting, a fail-safe deposit of seeds from countries all around the world, but it had nothing at all to do with her father’s work. He had been studying sea temperatures. The vault was inside a natural permafrost environment but that was still outside of his scope of research. She continued flitting around different pages on different sites, becoming more and more frustrated, just hoping something would jump out at her and help her make sense of what he was doing out there. Perhaps Bobby had deliberately sent her off down the wrong path. Why was she now willing to consider he might be innocent? Had she really believed his story, the one about some mysterious lover of his wife being responsible for his family’s death? Likewise his assertion he’d had nothing to do with Joseph Fletcher’s death. Indeed, he claimed they were friends. In truth when she’d asked point blank where he’d been that day Bobby had failed to offer any kind of alibi. When she dug really deep, Eloise conceded the reason she’d accepted what he’d said was due to the fact that he let her go. For a time there, out at sea, alone with him, she’d been totally convinced she was about to die. Getting out of there alive made her re-think her position. But she shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that none of the evidence had changed. She was losing patience with the seed vault lead, if that’s what it was. She clicked one final link, checking out the stocks of seeds. She was surprised to find that a full record of what was stored was available for public viewing.
